Find a “Real” Good Immigration Lawyer
Immigrants can have dozens of questions running through their mind as they look for a good immigration lawyer. How much is this going to cost? Will I be able to afford it? Is it really worth the money? How do I know if my lawyer is any good? Will they provide competent services? Are there any hidden fees? How will I find time to do everything I need to do in order to complete my application process?
But among the many questions running through an immigrant’s mind as they look for a good immigration lawyer, one of the questions that is probably not asked often enough is whether or not the person they are working with is a real immigration lawyer. Unfortunately, such a question is actually much more important than you would think.
Time and time again, there are headlines in the newspapers that tell of vulnerable immigrants being defrauded by unscrupulous pretenders, masquerading around as immigration lawyers. Often they promise more than any immigration attorney worth their salt would advise. It is always important to remember that you should feel free to insure that you are working with a licensed attorney, one who has the legal ability andobligation to serve your best interests.
Recent Example in Los Angeles
Los Angeles immigration attorneys may be aware of the city’s recent efforts to crack down on immigration fraudsters. A recent conviction of a 52-year-old man shows that it is beginning to have an effect. The man was found guilty of “unauthorized practice of law, violation of the Immigration Consultant Act, and violation of a permanent injunction.”1 For his crimes, he will spend a minimum of 90 days in jail after which he faces several years of probation.
The man had previously practiced law a decade earlier, making his crimes all the more serious. It is thought that there are over 2,000 people providing immigration-type services in California without the proper authority. Such practices are only the beginning of challenges for immigrants. Often these fraudsters can make an immigrant’s situation much worse, either filing documents incorrectly or not doing anything at all, leaving immigrants vulnerable by missing key and important deadlines.
So please, if you find yourself questioning whether or not your lawyer has the necessary credentials, please do the smart thing and verify that they do. There have been way too many immigrants hurt by dishonest individuals parading around as competent attorneys. One can only hope that efforts to crack down on fake immigration service providers will continue to work.
But you can’t simply trust that these efforts will be enough to protect you. Tell your friends who are in need of immigration services as well to be wary of possible immigration shysters posing as immigration attorneys. There have been too many tragedies. Find a real good immigration attorney and find a good real immigration attorney.
